Turnip Category Index Help

Brief Description:
Due to user feedback received from the first version of Turnip released in late 1996, we have redesigned the category navigation feature to reflect the structure typically found in the Yellow pages. In the current version, categories are arranged alphabetically in a drill-down tree structure starting where the 'root' is defined by letters A-Z. By choosing a letter, Turnip displays increasingly smaller subsets of the letter until the list is narrowed down to individual categories. After the individual category is located, (usually after 2 clicks of the mouse) a third click will reveal all of the businesses classified in the category.

Detailed Description:
Main Category Tree

  1. Book Selector

This is the book selector. Simply click on the listed book links to display business listings contained only in the chosen book. Notice that the current book is never contained in the links, but is displayed in orange directly underneath.

Note: Businesses that appear in one book may not appear in other books.

  2. Search box

This is the search box. Simply type in the name of the business you are attempting to find. After clicking 'Search', the search results page will appear displaying businesses that matched your query. The business name you type in need not match exactly. Turnip attempts to match businesses based on if the business name contains the search phrase you entered. For example, searching for 'Meij' will return business such as:

Meijer Inc
Fredrick Meijer Gardens
Meijer Pharmacy
John Meijer's Flowerpots

Turnip will also attempt to match your search phrase with predefined categories like those found in the Yellow Pages. For instance, entering 'Electrical' will return category matches similar to the following:

Electrical Discharge Machines & Supplies
Electrical Discharge Machining
Electrical Power Systems-Maintenance
Wire Harnesses-Electrical

Tip: The more specific your criteria, the less results you will have to page through. Capitalization doesn't matter, but punctuation does.

  3. Navigation toolbar
This is the navigation toolbar. Local news will display a list of local new sources, soon to be user configurable. Weather will display a list of local weather reports. This will also be user configurable. Carlot will allow you to search the local West Michigan area for new and used cars. Info will display all sorts of information regarding the Turnip site. Plant one displays information about adding/changing or deleting business to Turnip.

Tip: The navigation toolbar is also located at the bottom of each page in the form of hyperlinks.

  4. Category Navigation Tree

This is the category navigation tree through which the categories may be searched quickly and efficiently. Keep in mind that it may be faster to type the name of the category in the search box and search upon it. Clicking the right facing arrows or the hyperlink next to them will expand the described category revealing the underlying data. Downward facing arrows may be clicked to return to the previous level of the tree. The 'Back' button on your browser will achieve the same results.

Switching between books will collapse the tree back to the root. This is because books contain between 800-2500 categories depending on the size of the area. For instance, Grand Rapids will contain more categories than Allegan because the Grand Rapids area encompasses a greater variety of specialty businesses.

Tip: You can return to the Turnip Root for the current book by clicking on the turnip logo on the upper left corner of any page.
