Turnip Search Results Help

Brief Description:
The search results page is dynamically created based upon search criteria entered in the
search box. The typical search results pages consists of three sections: category matches, search results status, and the business matches. The category match section lists all of the categories for a particular book that contain the specified search criteria. The business match status section displays information on how many businesses match the search criteria as well as a Quick-Nav © index. The business matches section displays the businesses that matched the search criteria 20 records at a time.

  1. Book Selector and Search Box

Additional information is available here for the book selector (a) and search box (b).

  2. Category Matches

This is the category matches section. The specific search criteria is shown in orange. Category matches are listed in alphabetical order with the search criteria italicized within the words. In the example above, 'iron' is the search criteria. Notice how categories beginning with 'Environmental' as well as 'Iron Work' are shown. Turnip not only searched for categories that start with the search criteria, it searches for categories that contain it. To display the businesses classified under the displayed categories, simply click on the link and the category results page will be displayed.

Tip: The more specific your criteria, the less results you will have to page through. Capitalization doesn't matter, but punctuation does.

  3. Navigation toolbar
This is the navigation toolbar. Local news will display a list of local new sources, soon to be user configurable. Weather will display a list of local weather reports. This will also be user configurable. Carlot will allow you to search the local West Michigan area for new and used cars. Info will display all sorts of information regarding the Turnip site. Plant one displays information about adding/changing or deleting business to Turnip.

Tip: The navigation toolbar is also located at the bottom of each page in the form of hyperlinks.

  4. Search Results Status Bar

Turnip will display the search results status bar only if more than 10 businesses are returned in a search. Turnip displays businesses in groups (a) of 20. The Quick-Nav index (c) appears if more than 20 businesses are displayed, allowing users to easily thumb through large sets of search results much like flipping the pages of a phone book To use the Quick-Nav index, simply choose the link which alphabetically contains the name of the business. The current page in the Quick-Nav index is always shown in boldface type. If Turnip finds more than 200 businesses that match the specified search criteria, the Quick-Nav index will expand to include links to show additional pages of indexes.

In the example above, the Quick-Nav index shows that the page is displaying businesses that start with letters AA-De. Actually, upon closer examination of (b) Turnip is displaying businesses AAlpha Env-Custer Off. By clicking on the De link, Turnip would return businesses that start with the letters De-En. By clicking on the Ir link, Turnip would return businesses that start with the letters Ir-Ot. Index pages need not be navigated in order.

Tip: To show more business that you search criteria, use the Quick-Nav index located at the top and bottom of the business matches section if the number of matches exceeds 20.

  5. Business Matches

The business matches section shows the search results that appear on the current page of the Quick-Nav index.which is dynamically generated by entering search criteria into the search box. The name of the business (a) is always in boldface type. Next to the business name a small can be clicked on to show other businesses classified in a similar way. If the business is classified in more than one category, multiple categories will be displayed allowing the user to select one from which the businesses will be displayed.

Address and taglines (b) are shown under the business name. Since many businesses have multiple phone lines and/or phone numbers (c), Turnip will show them depending on a predefined order. Some businesses such as Meijer Inc, have many departments at many stores, each of which has its own individual phone number. Turnip intelligently groups the phone numbers according to store location and department name. Taglines may be a short company slogan or a simple description of the business's specialization.

Tip: You can return to the Turnip Root for the current book by clicking on the turnip logo on the upper left corner of any page.
